Troy Deeney must continue performing well for Watford to stand any chance of earning an England call-up, according to Hornets boss Walter Mazzarri.

Uncapped Deeney was overlooked by England interim manager Gareth Southgate for the World Cup Qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia, despite enjoying a productive start to the new season.

The 28-year-old forward has scored three goals in his last four matches and, ahead of Sunday's match at Middlesbrough live on Sky Sports 1 HD, Mazzarri has urged him to maintain his form in bid to earn international recognition.

"Deeney has to show and to prove in the next games that he can be called up to the national team," Mazzarri said.

"When I speak with Troy, I always tell him that he just needs to show it with Watford in order to be called up for the national team.

"He's got everything that a good forward needs. He's got physical, technical ability.

He will become only the fifth player in Watford's 135-year history to reach 100 goals if he scores at the Riverside Stadium, joining club legends Luther Blissett, Tommy Barnett, Cliff Holton and Ross Jenkins in the history books.

The Italian added: "The important thing is for them to perform very well on the pitch, helping the whole team.

"If he does this the goals will come. I hope he doesn't score only 100 goals, but many more."
