Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores says his side played well despite their defeat to Liverpool

Watford boss Quique Sanchez Flores rued his side's missed chances in their 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors conceded goals in each half from Joe Allen and Roberto Firmino to remain 13th in the Premier League.

However, had the Hornets taken their opportunities, especially in the second half when top-scorer Odion Ighalo was twice denied by brilliant saves from Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, then then the final score could have been different according to their manager

"I think we played well, we had opportunities to score in the match in the first and second half," Flores said.

"There was a point when I thought we could draw, we had opportunities in the second half, but we made some mistakes which made it difficult for us.

"If we scored with Ighalo's shot, then the final score would probably be different.

"But I am pleased with the overall performance, we fought a lot and did not lose the organisation of the system during the match and we tried all the time to look to attack and trying to reduce Liverpool's best players.

The home team's second goal, scored by Firmino with just 14 minutes to go, owed more than a little fortune to an error by Watford 'keeper Heurelho Gomes, who somehow managed to let his compatriot's shot beat him.

Flores, though, refused to single out the Brazilian, instead preferring to highlight his team's loss of possession in the build-up to the goal.

"I am not sure, I was far away from the situation, but we conceded the second goal because of a mistake before," he said

"We made a mistake with a pass in the middle and to pass in the middle is very, very difficult because they are waiting to pressure there.

"So, OK, it is these type of things that we try and remove, but it was a pity as we were competitive, played well and had possibilities during the match and finally we make a couple of big mistakes."
