Davide Santon is having the second part of his medical exam ahead of a season-long loan move from Inter Milan to West Ham, Sky sources understand.
The Hammers are understood to have offered a loan fee of £460,000 for the Italian full-back, with the option to make the deal permanent next summer for £5m.
West Ham have been in urgent need of cover at left-back after first-choice Aaron Cresswell was ruled out for up to four months in July with a knee ligament injury.
In their pursuit of cover, West Ham have had bids for Norwich's Martin Olsson and Hull's Andrew Robertson turned down, according to Sky sources.
Santon, who started his career at Inter, joined Newcastle in 2011 and went on to make 94 appearances for the club during his three-and-a-half years at St James' Park.
The 25-year-old, capped eight times by Italy, returned to Inter on loan in January 2015 before making the move permanent six months later.
He made only 13 appearances for Inter last season, all but one of those coming in the Serie A, and is contracted to Inter until 2018.
