West Ham and Liverpool could face a play-off to decide which club qualifies for next season's Europa League.
The Hammers and Reds could feasibly finish on the same number of points, with the same goal difference and goals scored.
If that happens, and the two teams are disputing a Europa League place, the clubs would face a play-off on a neutral ground.
First, a number of things must happen.
West Ham must lose 1-0 at Stoke on Sunday, and Liverpool must beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1, or there must be another situation which sees the Hammers lose by one goal and Liverpool win by one goal, while scoring two goals more than West Ham
In addition, Southampton, who are in sixth, a place above Liverpool and one below West Ham, must fail to beat Crystal Palace at St Mary's.
Liverpool must then lose next week's Europa League final against Sevilla in Basel, as a victory will put them in the Champions League. In addition, all the other European qualification permutations must leave Liverpool and West Ham fighting over one Europa League spot.
League rules state: "If at the end of the season either the league champions or the clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, venue and timing of which shall be determined by the board."
