Wigan slumped to a second defeat in a row for the first time under Paul Cook as Blackpool recorded a deserved 2-0 win at the DW Stadium in Sky Bet League One.
Manager Cook had demanded a response to the dismal display at Southend on Saturday, and made only one change as he gave his players the opportunity to atone.
But from the minute Armand Gnanduillet opened the scoring for the Seasiders inside three minutes, deflecting home Kelvin Mellor's effort, there was only one winner.
Mellor himself made it two with eight minutes of the first half remaining, with Wigan unable to clear a corner.
And the Blackpool right-back almost added a third in the dying seconds, only for on-loan Brighton goalkeeper to superbly tip over his bullet header from a Colin Daniel cross.
Wigan's misery was compounded with the 88th-minute booking for skipper Sam Morsy, which rules him out of next Monday's FA Cup fifth-round tie against Manchester City.
The defeat also meant Shrewsbury took over at the top of League One by a single point after their victory at Fleetwood.
