Mustapha Carayol is understood to have joined Nottingham Forest after his contract with Middlesbrough was terminated by mutual consent.
Carayol joined Boro in a £350,000 deal from Bristol City three years ago but did not feature for the club last season after returning to fitness following a serious knee injury sustained 18 months ago.
"Muzzy Carayol has parted company with the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent," a statement on Boro's website read.
"The cancellation of his contract enables the player to move on, and Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz Alhasawi has announced that the player has joined his club on a two-year contract."
The Gambia-born winger had loan spells at Huddersfield and Leeds last term, making a total of 27 appearances in the Championship, scoring four goals.
