It was a captain's goal when City needed it most, breaking the stalemate with an unstoppable 30-yard drive into the top corner just as Pep Guardiola's side looked out of ideas, wrote Jack Wilkinson.
In their hour of need, City's captain produced a moment fit to decide any match - and perhaps the title race - as his rasping drive flew beyond Schmeichel.
The result - City's 13th consecutive league victory - means they can become the first side in a decade to retain the title if they win at Brighton on the final day of the season.
"It came from desire and belief. I haven't scored this season, for me I always feel like in big moments, moments like this, I am going to do something.
"Today there was a little bit of frustration, I could hear the 'Don't shoot, don't shoot!' and it was annoying me a little. I thought I haven't come this far in my career for young players to tell me whether I can take a shot or not and I just took it.
"It's a funny story because it is 15 years of playing top-level football of having midfielders tell me 'Don't shoot, play the ball wide' and every single time I've missed I've told them for 15 years 'One day I am going to have a shot from outside the box and I am going to score a goal and you're going to be really happy with that one!'
"Today it happened, we have not achieved anything but it was an important win against a strong team."
"I was thinking 'Don't shoot! Pass the ball, pass the ball!' but he took a good decision. Honestly, I didn't have too much confidence in him being able to score but football is meant for that!
"I have said many times the artists are the players, they have to decide in one fraction of a second, they make decisions and the goal is important but it is more important that he shot believing he was going to score a goal. He is a big believer."
Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus tell Vincent Kompany at full-time that they were both shouting at him not to shoot seconds before he hit one of the goals of the season.
Gary Neville: "I was in this stadium when the Sergio Aguero goal went in and obviously for these fans out here it can never get any better then that, but that's just run it mighty close.
"Kompany is a City hero, a giant at this club he has been for 10 years. He is someone that everybody looks up and respects. Kompany is outstanding on the pitch, outstanding off the pitch but what he has done tonight, though, is another level. You could have thought of a million ways that this football game could have been settled tonight and that would not have been one of them.
"That was a crowd that I called eager in the first half. It was getting desperate out there. They recognised that this was an uncomfortable experience and for him to step in that moment and deliver is incredible.
"I can imagine the coaches asking at the end of training: 'Who is staying out for some shots?' it won't be him. He'll be on the massage bed. He'll not know where that's come from himself. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing. This is the one of the iconic moments that we've seen in the last 20 years of the Premier League. It's an unbelievable moment because of who scored it. You think of Tony Adams running through, you think of Steve Bruce's goal and this one here. We've seen an iconic moment."
Jamie Carragher: "That is going to be one of the iconic moments of the season if Manchester City go on to do the job and win the Premier League title. I think it will be the iconic moment because it was looking at one stage it was looking like being in Liverpool's hands."
