Silva, who became Pep Guardiola's first signing of the summer when he joined for £43m from Monaco last week, spoke about the Brazilian stopper at a Portugal news conference on Tuesday.

"If it is confirmed that Ederson goes to Manchester City I'll be very happy, because I know him very well," Silva said.

"I had the pleasure of sharing some moments at Benfica's youth teams, although he is a year older than me. He is a great goalkeeper and if I can play with him in the next season I will be very happy."

The 22-year-old midfielder has been a star for Monaco this season, notching 11 goals from 58 appearances in his side's Ligue 1 title triumph and run to the semi-final of the Champions League.

Silva has earned 12 caps for Portugal to date, and singled out Guardiola as one of the main reasons for his transfer to City.
