Javier Mascherano has admitted he would understand if goalkeeper Claudio Bravo decided to leave Barcelona for Manchester City.
Sky sources understand City have agreed a £17m fee with Barcelona for the Chile international, who made 32 appearances last season as Luis Enrique's side defended their La Liga title.
But his potential move to the Etihad Stadium is currently on hold due to a knee injury sustained by fellow Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with the Germany international likely to be out for at least three weeks.
City remain hopeful of completing a deal before the close of the summer transfer window and Mascherano accepts Bravo could leave the Nou Camp in the coming weeks.
"Claudio is a great professional, he is one of the most experienced players in this team," the Argentina international midfielder said.
"However, I will understand if he decides to leave if he thinks that is the best decision for his career."
Mascherano added: "All I can say is that Claudio has given us a lot in the past two seasons and I hope he stays here. He is an important part of this team."
Bravo, who joined Barca from Real Sociedad two years ago, is under contract with the La Liga champions until June 2018.
When asked about the goalkeeping dilemma at Barca with Bravo and Ter Stegen presently vying for the No 1 spot, Mascherano said: "Both of them are great goalkeepers. The ideal thing for us is to have both players continue."
