Manchester City target Leroy Sane has informed Schalke he wants to leave the club this summer, according to Sky sources in Germany.
Sane, who was part of Germany's Euro 2016 squad, is scheduled to return to training in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday following an extended summer break.
Schalke value the winger at £40m but City have so far been unwilling to meet their asking price.
Pep Guardiola confirmed last week that City are engaged in talks with Schalke over the sale of Sane but admitted the sides were far apart in negotiations.
"There's a difference between City and Schalke and it's quite big, but I don't know what's going to happen in the coming weeks and months," Guardiola said.
It is understood negotiations continue with Schalke's preference being for a deal to be concluded sooner rather than later so they can pursue other targets.
Sane was outstanding for Schalke in the Bundesliga last season as he scored eight goals and registered six assists.
The 20-year-old can operate on either flank and his arrival would further bolster Guardiola's attacking options following the acquisition of Nolito for £13.8m from Celta Vigo earlier this summer.
