Manuel Pellegrini is happy to welcome back Vincent Kompany but accepts there are no guarantees he will not break down again.
City's influential captain is set to return for Sunday's crucial Premier League game against Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.
And it will be his latest comeback in a season dotted with recurring calf problems.
The 29-year-old Belgium defender will hope to be a permanent fixture during City's run-in for the title but his Chilean manager realises it could all go awry again.
Pellegrini said: "It's impossible to know but he's working without any problems, without fear, so it would be bad luck if he has another injury.
"It's very difficult to find a particular thing about a muscle injury. There's a lot of things you can do to try to have less injuries but no one will be sure you are not going to have any more.
"I think every player that will play the game must be 100 per-cent fit and Vincent has been working the last three weeks without any problems.
"He played 45 minutes in a friendly with the under-21s so I think that he is ready now to play."
Pellegrini also noted the importance of keeping City's other influential players fit for the rest of the season.
"It's important to have our important players all together," he added.
"We started the season with Vincent, (David) Silva, (Yaya) Toure and (Sergio) Aguero, all of them playing in the first five games.
"After that, for different reasons, this is the first time they will play together again."
