Roma striker Seydou Doumbia is set to undergo a medical at Newcastle ahead of a loan deal for the rest of the season.
However, a move for Atletico Madrid left-back Guilherme Siqueira has broken down.
Siqueira was scheduled to arrive on Tyneside for a medical on Saturday but was then made a second offer by Gary Neville's Valencia, who were offering a longer deal. He has since joined the Spanish club on an 18 month loan with an option to buy at the end of the deal.
Newcastle have now shifted their attention elsewhere with manager Steve McClaren keen to land a left back before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.
The Magpies are keen to land both Doumbia and Saido Berahino to boost their attack and have lodged a £21m bid for the West Brom striker.
The club are also interested in Swansea's Bafetimbi Gomis but, in light of the bid for Berahino, the 30-year-old French striker appears to be a fall-back option.
Newcastle have struggled to score goals this season and their total of 25 from 23 games is the sixth-worst in the Premier League.
Georginio Wijnaldum has scored nine league goals from midfield but strikers Aleksandar Mitrovic and Papiss Cisse - who is sidelined with a groin injury - have managed just four and two respectively.
Doumbia is a 28-year-old Ivory Coast international who joined Roma in January 2015 after twice finishing as the top scorer in the Russian Premier League for CSKA Moscow.
However, the striker did not settle in Italy and has spent the last few months back on loan at CSKA Moscow, where he has scored five goals in 13 league games, while also netting three times in the Champions League.
Gomis has fallen out of favour at Swansea after a red-hot start to the season in which he scored four goals in their opening four games.
The 30-year-old has scored just once in Swansea's 19 league games since and has started just three of their last 11 and none of their past four. The arrival of Alberto Paloschi from Chievo is likely to push him further down the pecking order.
