Newcastle are considering an offer from Shanghai Shenhua for midfielder Cheick Tiote, according to Sky sources.
Sky sources also understand Tiote will be allowed to leave Newcastle this month after five-and-a-half years at St James' Park.
The 29-year-old started Tuesday night's 3-3 draw with Manchester United, a match that saw Newcastle unveil new midfield signings Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey before kick-off.
When asked whether the appearance against United was Tiote's last for the club, Newcastle manager Steve McClaren said: "I'm not too sure. As I said before, once something happens we'll announce it and let you know.
"I do feel he has been very, very good the past two or three games for us."
Tiote joined Newcastle in 2010 from Dutch side FC Twente, where he had previously won the Eredivisie title under the management of McClaren.
He has made 144 appearances for Newcastle to date, scoring just once.
