Newcastle manager Steve McClaren failed to hide his disappointment with the referee after his side lost 3-0 at Sunderland.
Fabricio Coloccini was sent off at the end of the first half for a last-man foul on Steven Fletcher, allowing Adam Johnson to fire the hosts in front from the spot.
Newcastle had dominated the game up to that point but could not make it count, and Sunderland then capitalised on the extra man to go on and seal an emphatic win.
McClaren bemoaned the decisions made by referee Robert Madley, and felt his side should have had a penalty for a Lee Cattermole challenge on Georginio Wijnaldum seconds before Coloccini was dismissed.
"When I look at it again, he's got two wrong," he said.
"Just before the penalty Wijnaldum turned Cattermole and he dragged him back. I thought that was a penalty, then straight up the other end I think Colo just leaned into him - he was never going to get the ball.
"So, those decisions have cost the game. We talk about defining moments [and that was one].
"You don't win games with 10 men. You might draw them, and I still felt that we were going to.
"I was so positive about the performance of the players and the way we played. Even with 10 men we passed the ball, controlled the game, created chances - it just wasn't our day.
"I'm just aggrieved at the decisions on the day, which you can't control. They cost you football matches.
"I never make excuses, but it's a hard one to take."
McClaren went further in his pre-match news conference, saying: "I have seen lots of challenges like that in the game, in every game and, outside the box, they are never given. It's a double whammy - a penalty and 10 men. It made it very difficult.
"We need an experienced referee for this and I think in both instances, he was a little too quick to make a decision."
Newcastle have now lost the last six derby clashes with Sunderland, who leapfrogged the Magpies in the table after Sunday's result.
McClaren was disappointed his side were unable to follow up their first win of the season against Norwich with another positive result, but he praised his side's performance at the Stadium of Light.
"I couldn't fault our players - they were absolutely magnificent throughout that first half," he said.
"I've never sat and felt so comfortable. We looked a very good team, created chances, and as I say we should have had a penalty.
"The way we're playing football and the way we're going at the moment, we're progressing, you can see that.
"I just said to the players it was a fantastic performance, but we're disappointed for the fans because it's their day, and to lose like that is hard.
"For 24 hours we'll commiserate and be down about it, but on Tuesday morning we'll look towards Stoke."
