Prince William was a guest of honour at Villa Park as his side beat Cardiff to cement a play-off place - and boss Steve Bruce joked that his team talk must have worked.

The Duke of Cambridge is a life-long Villa supporter and watched the game from the stands with former Villa forward John Carew, as Jack Grealish's superb goal sealed a 1-0 win.

Villa manager Steve Bruce said: "We are honoured that the future king is an Aston Villa fan. He popped into the dressing room tonight, did the team-talk, picked the team and it worked wonders.

"It was good to see him. We have given him a ticket for the next game."

William was pictured laughing and joking with Carew, who made over 100 Premier League appearances and scored 48 goals in a four-year spell with the West Midlands club.

Villa skipper John Terry posted a picture of William alongside himself, Mile Jedinak, Conor Hourihane, Grealish, Glenn Whelan and Ahmed Elmohamady on Instagram after the game.

The victory kept Villa fourth in the league and 10 points clear within the play-offs with four games to go.
