Remi Garde was pleased with Aston Villa's fighting spirit against Tottenham

Aston Villa boss Remi Garde praised his side's attitude despite seeing them slip to a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham.

Harry Kane scored twice, either side of half-time, to earn Mauricio Pochettino's side all three points and leave Villa bottom of the table, nine points from safety.

However, while Garde was frustrated by certain aspects of the performance, he refused to criticise their spirit and desire.

"I think defensively we didn't play well enough not to concede goals because we know in our current situation that conceding goals makes us very fragile," he told Sky Sports.

"But then, even though we were 2-0 down we had the spirit to fight and create opportunities and we missed a little bit of luck, probably because that is the way the season of Aston Villa is going."

The former Lyon manager was disappointed with the manner in which his team conceded the first goal though as they were caught out by a quick free-kick before letting in a second just after the break.

"It is the worst time to concede a goal [just after half-time] but I was very upset with the first one because we lost concentration," added Garde.

"All the opportunities that Tottenham had in this game we gave them. They are a good they side and they don't need silly fouls like we [gave them].

"Tottenham is a very good side that are playing for the title, they are far better than us but in this 90 minutes I think we have shown we still have the desire and the right attitude.

"In football sometimes you play against teams that are better than you and I think it was the case today."
