Remi Garde says he was disappointed not to leave The Hawthorns with all three points after seeing Aston Villa draw 0-0 with West Brom..
The visitors had the better of the second half after a dull first period and made the game's best chances.
They could not edge in front, however, despite decent efforts from Jordan Ayew and Rudy Gestede either side of half-time.
The result gives Villa another point in their bid for survival in the Premier League but they remain six adrift of second-bottom Sunderland and 10 from safety.
Garde was encouraged by some aspects of his team's display but concedes they are at a point now where they must begin converting such performances into winning ones.
The Frenchman said: "I am a little bit disappointed because we wanted to win this game to get three points. It was very important for us.
"This is because of our difficult situation but in another time and another situation, it would have been a good point away against a very strong team.
"We fought very well in the first half and in the second half we had the ball. We passed well and tried to create chances.
"We had some and they were not very clear but we had the ball in their half and we didn't score a goal. To win games, you have to do that."
Although Villa still have just two league wins to their credit this season, travelling supporters reacted positively to the character shown by their side.
Garde added: "To be fair, I was moved because they probably deserved better but I'm happy about the way my players behave now.
"We look like a team, we fight with our quality. I don't know if we have enough quality to stay in the league and we will see at the end.
"But I talked to me players and told them I want to keep the spirit at least until the end of the season."
While opposite number Tony Pulis felt Villa did not merit a first-half penalty for Jonas Olsson's clumsy challenge on Ayew, Garde was forgiving of referee Bobby Madley's decision not to award anything.
Asked why he felt nothing had been given, he said: "I don't know, maybe, maybe not. It was not so obvious. Sometimes you have (these decisions), sometimes you don't; this is the ref. I respect (it)."
