Liam Rosenior thinks Callum Wilson would be a "perfect fit" for Tottenham, who he says are facing a crucial period over the next few months.
Spurs could be on the lookout for a striker this month after Harry Kane was ruled out until March with an ankle injury.
Former Fulham, Hull and Brighton defender Rosenior acknowledged January is a "difficult window" - but said Spurs need to make a move.
"I think the Tottenham fans will be desperate for the club to get someone in," he said on The Debate.
"Mauricio Pochettino has done such a good job. They were minutes away from knocking Juventus out of the Champions League last season and I am desperate for them to take the next step. Now is the time to make that mark.
"I look at Callum Wilson and think he's the perfect fit. He is of a profile where he would be delighted to have the chance to play for a club like Tottenham.
"He gives them the pace to run in behind and I wouldn't be surprised if they do put a marker down and show they want to keep Pochettino and build for the future.
"I praised Tottenham in the summer because they realised they had an outstanding head coach who has performed nothing short of a miracle to get them in a position where can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool, but now they are in a position where they have to do something."
It has been reported that Bournemouth striker Wilson would cost £50m this month.
Ex-England defender Stuart Pearce thinks Spurs might instead look to the loan market for cover for Kane.
"I am not sure they will spend this month. I think they will wait until Kane is back and fit.
"It's a big blow, but they have put all that investment into the training ground and new stadium and the January window is very difficult to get top quality players through the door.
"Maybe the loan market might be a way forward. Chelsea are desperate for a striker too, so maybe you loan someone until the summer."
