Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks needs further scans on a twisted ankle - but Mauricio Pochettino admits the youngster's season may be over.

The 21-year-old had to be stretchered off during Spurs' 2-0 win at Burnley on Saturday after an awkward collision and fall in the first half.

Winks was taken straight to a nearby hospital but initial scans proved inconclusive and he returned to Turf Moor on crutches wearing a protective boot.

Ahead of Wednesday's clash with Swansea, Pochettino said: "He is doing another scan (today). In that moment we will see his real problem.

"We hope it's not a big issue but it will be difficult to play again this season. He twisted his ankle but we need to see the scan and then start his recovery."

It comes as a huge blow to Winks, who was making only his third Premier League start of the season following an impressive recent spell.

Tottenham will also continue to assess Victor Wanyama ahead of Wednesday's trip to Swansea after he sustained a back problem against the Clarets.

His condition is far less serious but will be another concern as Mauricio Pochettino's side look to continue their pressure on league-leaders Chelsea, with Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Erik Lamela - who had surgery this week - still out.

Spurs' win at Burnley cut the lead at the top to seven points with nine games remaining after Chelsea were beaten at home 2-1 by Crystal Palace.
