Reading boss Brian McDermott insists loanee Michael Hector can make it at Chelsea

Reading manager Brian McDermott praised the performance of goalscorer Michael Hector and believes he could play holding midfield for Chelsea in future.

The 23-year-old, naturally a centre-back, is back on loan at Reading from Chelsea and scored the second in a 3-1 win for the Royals over West Brom in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Darren Fletcher had given West Brom the lead but goals from Paul McShane, Hector and Lucas Piazon gave Reading victory.

McDermott insists he wants to build something special at The Madejski Stadium and is confident that in time he can do that.

"We're trying to make something of the season and we're trying to build something here again, something special," he said.

"Everybody wants everything today, sometimes it's not like that. We've had a couple of years here where it's been difficult. I know this place pretty well so I think from my point of view, it's just a time thing, trying to build.

"Give me some time, give the staff and the players some time. There was a great camaraderie between the players and the fans today and it was a great atmosphere so it gives the players confidence going into the next games."

As for Hector, the former Leeds boss was full of praise for his attitude as well as his ability.

"I spoke to Michael about playing that role and said 'if you can develop another string to your bow, that holding midfielder, how many teams in the world play using that position?' he explained.

"He can play for Chelsea in that role. I've spoken to Chelsea about Michael playing that role and they're happy. He can play centre-half or he can play holding midfield, I thought he was terrific today. He did a really good job and it's good news for him going forward.

"He was a Reading player and he got his chance at Reading, he's not got one eye on Chelsea in the summer, he's got both eyes on Reading so that's fabulous for us."
