Tony Cottee believes David Unsworth should be considered for permanent Everton role but questions whether the under-23 manager is ready.
Speaking on Premier League Daily, ex-Everton player Cottee said Unsworth is definitely an option for Everton manager after Ronald Koeman's sacking on Monday.
"Unsworth should certainly be considered," he said. "He knows the club very well and has learnt his trade.
"'Is he ready for it? That would be the question mark on that one."
Unsworth has been confirmed in temporary charge for the second time and will sit in the dugout for Everton's Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night.
The 44-year-old had previously held the reins in 2016 after the departure of Roberto Martinez.
Sky Sports News understands that Everton chairman Bill Kenwright and a significant number of Everton players want Unsworth to be offered the permanent position
Cottee said: "I played with Unsworth, he is a great lad, he loves Everton football club. He has gone through the process and has come through the system as a player and now as a coach as well."
Burnley boss Sean Dyche is currently the favourite to replace Koeman, whose tenure at Goodison Park came to an end after Saturday's 5-2 defeat to Arsenal.
Cottee said: "I'd like to see the club go down the British route and I think they need to go back to what they know best and what the club is all about."
