Everton manager Roberto Martinez gives his thoughts on the defeat

Roberto Martinez felt Everton were unfortunate to leave the Emirates empty-handed after their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

The Toffees conceded two quick goals in the first half to fall 2-0 behind in the Premier League on Saturday night, but pulled one back before the break through Ross Barkley.

Romelu Lukaku went close to equalising when he headed against the bar, while Petr Cech saved well from Gerard Deulofeu.

Asked whether his side should have got something from the game, Martinez said: "It feels that way.

"We shot ourselves in the foot in terms of giving away such an easy two-goal lead... and we had a couple of good opportunities when maybe we should have done better.

"There are many positives as we showed character in the second half but there is disappointment of giving away such a soft two-goal lead."

Both goals came from headers as Olivier Giroud flicked the opener past Tim Howard and then Laurent Koscielny nodded in from a free-kick.

"I think you can defend the runs into the box better," said Martinez. "You shouldn't leave any man with a free run into that area. The goalkeeper will also be disappointed with the goals knowing his experience."

Martinez's frustration was compounded by a knee injury to captain Phil Jagielka that forced the Toffees captain off in the second half.

"It was very concerning," said Martinez. "We don't know the extent of the injury but that's probably the worst negative from the game," he added.

The defeat rounds off a tough week for the Toffees after the death of club legend Howard Kendall and the home loss to Manchester United.

But Martinez said: "We go forward with pride because we lost an Everton giant in Howard Kendall... we want to use his legacy and career as a real inspiration going forward.

"We have outstanding young players, outstanding talent in the squad and we want to be very proud of our club and look forward to start winning games on a consistent basis.

"It's a difficult period in terms of results but the character and desire we showed in the second half was a good platform to use the talent we have in the group."
