Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says guiding his team to a 20th FA Cup final shows the strength of the club after his side beat Manchester City 2-1 in extra-time on Sunday.

Wenger, who has been under pressure to leave his role as Arsenal manager following the expiration of his contract at the end of the season, and Arsenal will return to Wembley to face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on May 27.

Alexis Sanchez turned in Arsenal's winner in the 101st minute, meaning the Gunners will have featured in more FA Cup finals than any other team in the history of the competition when they face the Blues in May.

Wenger believes the semi-final win is symbolic of the club's strength, despite a difficult season for the manager and his players.

"The club is in a very strong state," Wenger said in his post-match press conference.

"We have a very strong overall situation and strong team. One day I will leave and I'm sure Arsenal will always be a great club that everyone admires.

"When you watch the stands, and see how big this club is, I'm just happy our fans can go home happy. We have gone through a very difficult period. We have shown a united response."

Wenger also says his decision to revert to a back three for Arsenal's win over Middlesbrough last Monday, and again against Manchester City on Sunday, shows he has helped instill defensive stability.

He added: "No matter what you do, people say 'why didn't you do it earlier?' You can always judge it both ways.

"What I did was to give the team more security [playing a back three]. We conceded three goals at Liverpool, West Brom and Crystal Palace and we needed something for the players to focus on.

"I made some tough decisions this season., We have gone through a tough period. It's my job to get it right and when it does we are happy."

The first question put to the Frenchman in his press conference was whether his team's performance gives him hope for next season, following reports he is set to sign a contract extension with the Gunners.

"I don't understand your question," he replied.
