Tunnel Talk - Arsenal v Liverpool

Joe Gomez has "fully justified" his starting role in Liverpool's improving defence, according to Sky Sports' Alan Smith.

Gomez was a standout performer in Tuesday's goalless draw against Arsenal at the Emirates - and earned a first call-up to the England U21 squad on Wednesday.

Co-commentator Alan Smith, speaking to Sky Sports reporter Patrick Davison in the latest Tunnel Talk series, paid tribute to the teenager as part of a rearguard yet to concede a Premier League goal.

"He's been great for the first three games," Smith said from the Emirates tunnel after the final whistle. "It's a measure of the confidence Brendan Rodgers has got in him that he's put him in straight in.

"He's fully justified his inclusion. He gave a terrific performance.

"Three clean sheets on the trot is a great platform to build on. He (Rodgers) has got a back four that's building a great understanding.

Teenage signing Joe Gomez has already helped improve Liverpool's defending this season

"It's one thing getting one against Stoke and Bournemouth but you're up against some of the greatest attacking players in the division here."
