Liverpool forward Sadio Mane is hoping to strike fear into opposition defenders after producing a blistering start to his Anfield career.

Mane, who joined the Reds in a club-record £36m transfer earlier this summer, has already scored twice for Jurgen Klopp's side this season, including a well-executed finish in Saturday's 4-1 win over Premier league champions Leicester.

The former Southampton forward has already drawn comparisons to Liverpool legend John Barnes and Mane says he is now aiming to write his own name into the history books at Anfield.

"I will be happy if they (defenders) are afraid of me because it will make it easier for me," said the 24-year-old, who received a standing ovation during the win over the Foxes.

"When you are new it can sometimes be difficult to adapt into the team. But it is easy with great players like Daniel [Sturridge], Philippe [Coutinho] and Roberto [Firmino] as well.

"When you play in a stadium like Anfield you want to give your best and get an ovation at the end, so I try.

"I'm just pleased because it is a great compliment to be compared to the legendary players, but I am still young and learning and need to give my best for the team."

Firmino opened the scoring with a fine turn and shot before Mane put the Reds two up with a dinked finish over Kasper Schmeichel.

Adam Lallana, fresh from his goalscoring exploits with England, added a long-range third after Jamie Vardy had earlier pulled one back for the visitors - leaving Firmino to add gloss to the result with break-away goal in the closing stages.

With no European football to contend with this season, Liverpool now have six-day break before they travel to Stamford Bridge on Friday to face Chelsea in the league, live on Friday Night Football.

And, despite his scintillating early-season form, Mane says he still needs to work hard on the training pitch in order to impress Klopp.

"Yes, I am in a good way, but you have to work," he said. "That work started on the day I signed and now I have to keep going in training and show it every game."
