What they need...

With experienced Slovakia international Martin Skrtel heading for the Anfield exit door and veteran fellow centre-back Kolo Toure having left the club at the end of last season, Jurgen Klopp will be in the market for a new defender to supplement his earlier purchase of Joel Matip.

Meanwhile, with question marks still hanging over the future of out-of-favour striker Christian Benteke, the German is also likely to be on the lookout for more firepower to add to his attack next season, especially given the ongoing worries over Daniel Sturridge's ability to stay fit.

Who are the targets?

Liverpool have been linked with the likes of Leicester City's Ben Chilwell and Cologne's Jonas Hector throughout the summer as Klopp looks to provide much-needed competition for left-back Alberto Moreno.

The Reds have been monitoring AC Milan full-back Mattia De Sciglio too as Klopp tries to tighten up their porous defence from the previous campaign, but a deal for a centre-back - Augsburg's Ragnar Klavan - looks to be close.

Further forward, Klopp appears to have cooled his interest in being reunited with unsettled Bayern Munich playmaker Mario Gotze having now signed Sadio Mane, but Newcastle's Gini Wijnaldum has emerged as a fresh potential target.

With Jordon Ibe having left for Bournemouth, Liverpool are believed to still want to lure Udinese midfielder Piotr Zielinski to Merseyside, despite seeing their initial £9.5m bid for the Pole rejected by the Rossoneri.

What the manager has said

"All the players who came back from loans are in the squad for the moment, but we have to see," said Klopp after Liverpool's 1-0 win over Tranmere in their opening pre-season encounter of the summer.

"My job is to give them the best training that I can, and at the end we have to make decisions. We have 38 players at the moment, and that is 100 per cent too much!

"We have to take some decisions, but you can be sure that if a team takes a player from us, they will have had two or three weeks of really hard and intensive training in their legs, and are as fit as they possibly can be."

Phil Thompson's view

"If Christian Benteke and Mario Balotelli go then I'd still like to see another striker come in. I've been saying for a few years that I'd like to see Liverpool try and tempt Gonzalo Higuain away from Napoli.

"Another one, after Pep Guardiola left Bayern, would be to bring Xavi Alonso back to do a Gary Mcallister and spend his final few years at Liverpool. I think it would help Emre Can and Jordan Henderson understand the role and I still think he's one of the best passes around. I know he loved every minute of his time with Liverpool.

"I'd also like to see Joe Allen stay and I've been saying that for a long time. Has was one of our most consistent performers after Christmas and deserves a new deal and more playing time."
