Liverpool defence a major concern for Jurgen Klopp, says Dean Ashton

Former Norwich striker Dean Ashton says Jurgen Klopp's priority at Liverpool must be attending to their defensive frailties.

Ashton watched Liverpool's 5-4 victory over his old side at Carrow Road on Saturday and was impressed by the spirit of the visitors, but not the quality on show.

Liverpool recovered from 3-1 down to lead 4-3 before Adam Lallana scored with virtually the last kick of the game after Norwich had levelled through Sebastien Bassong in stoppage time.

Liverpool have averaged two goals a game in the last seven matches, and despite conceding 12 over the same period, Ashton believes Klopp will be satisfied with his 'work in progress' at Anfield.

"I think he'll be happy in the fact of how much that brings the squad together and the character that they showed obviously to come back, they were drawing and then to come back again, I think that shows real fighting character in the squad," Ashton told Sky Sports Now.

"And he does love a celebration. Norwich weren't very happy obviously but I think that's what he's like, that's the passion that he shows, I think he wants everyone to be together.

"But what will be a real worry is the amount of goals they concede. They are struggling to keep clean sheets, they are too easy to cut through, especially Alberto Moreno on the left-hand side, who really struggled with a couple of the goals being his fault."

But while Ashton says the former Borussia Dortmund boss will be alarmed by Liverpool's defending, the former West Ham and England striker says it will be the summer before the situation is properly addressed.

"I think the defence is something he'll be looking for, probably not in this window but certainly in the summer," Ashton added.

"I know Borussia Dortmund were an attacking team, but he did like to have a strong defence, and they didn't concede that many goals with Mats Hummels at the head of that.

"So I think it will bother him that they are conceding as many goals as they are."
