Jurgen Klopp admitted he did not know why Liverpool's standards slipped in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle

Jurgen Klopp was surprised his Liverpool side failed to perform his trademark pressing game in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle.

Newcastle eased the pressure on their manager Steve McClaren with the win on Super Sunday.

Georginio Wijnaldum was the difference between the teams, playing a big part in Martin Skrtel's opening own goal after the break before wrapping up the points in injury-time with a classy finish.

Liverpool only had one shot on target in the game as they failed to match the heights of their previous away performances under Klopp.

Dietmar Hamann and Thierry Henry are not sure if Alberto Moreno's disallowed goal should have stood or if he actually meant it.

Steve McClaren says the Newcastle players got their reward for working really hard against Liverpool

"We can play much more football. We didn't play any counter-pressing - the pressing wasn't good.

"Newcastle not only played long balls, they build-up play but we wasn't there. We wasn't compact enough. It's better you lose a bad game rather than lose a good game. That's easier to make it better."
