Jurgen Klopp has agreed to become Liverpool manager and is on Merseyside ahead of a Friday morning news conference.
The 48-year-old, who led Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles in a seven-year spell before leaving the club in May, landed at the city's John Lennon airport shortly after 5pm on Thursday.
He is set to be unveiled in a Liverpool news conference scheduled for 10am on Friday.
The club's American owners, Fenway Sports Group, have acted swiftly after sacking Brendan Rodgers on Sunday following the 1-1 draw at Everton.
Contact was first made with Klopp on Monday along with the former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, but the Italian ruled himself out on Tuesday while talks progressed quickly with first-choice candidate Klopp.
A number of Liverpool's backroom staff have already been moved aside ready for Klopp's arrival, with first-team coach Gary McAllister, Rodgers' assistant manager Sean O'Driscoll, head of performance Glen Driscoll and head of opposition analysis Chris Davies all dismissed from their positions.
Pep Ljinders will remain as part of the first-team coaching set-up, Sky sources understand, while McAllister took training on Thursday and is understood to be considering the offer of another role in the coaching setup.
Klopp is expected to bring in his former Dortmund assistant - the Bosnian Zeljko Buvac, who is known as 'the Brain' due to his tactical knowledge. Klopp has previously described him as a "master of every form of training".
The pair have known each other since 1992 when they were team-mates at Mainz. After their playing career, Klopp appointed Buvac as his assistant when he took over at Mainz in 2001.
Klopp could also bring another of his former Dortmund coaches with him. Peter Krawietz, who never played professional football, specialises as a video analyst.
Klopp's first game in charge would be a trip to Tottenham in the Premier League on October 17.
