Antonio Conte felt Chelsea were unlucky in their 2-1 EFL Cup fourth-round defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Wednesday.
The visitors made almost wholesale changes for the match as only four players who started in the 4-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday retained their place.
And they spurned several good opportunities before Gary Cahill netted a consolation effort deep into second-half injury-time.
"We created many chances but we were unlucky," Conte told Sky Sports. "We played a good game with good intensity and good spirit.
"My players fought until the end to try to change the result. We created many chances but only scored once. It's a pity but now we must prepare for Sunday against Southampton. We are sorry to go out of this competition."
Cheikhou Kouyate put West Ham ahead in the 11th minute and Edimilson Fernandes doubled the advantage shortly after half-time.
"The timing of the second goal was very bad for us," said Conte. "In that moment their confidence increased and ours decreased. Despite this we tried until the end."
The end of the match was marred by trouble in the stands between fans, and Conte added: "I must be honest, because I didn't see the situation. We were playing and I didn't see this.
"I don't like this type of situation. It's important to see always the right atmosphere.
"Above all in England, we are used to see the right atmosphere. This country is fantastic in this aspect. I'm sorry about this situation."
