Chelsea have defended the £90 cost of an 'authentic version' of the new home kit they will wear next season.

The traditional blue adidas kit will be used for the 2016-17 season and takes some inspiration from the club crest.

However, after receiving criticism on social media at the £90 cost of an "authentic version" of the jersey, the club pointed out that a standard shirt costs £55.

A spokesman said: "There are people who want to buy the more expensive authentic version and we are happy to cater for that market but, to be clear, Chelsea FC are selling the main replica shirt for £55 for adults, and from £45 for children, which is in line with other leading European clubs.

"Ninety-nine per cent of the Chelsea shirts that will be on sale in the UK will be the replica version."

The new design will make its debut in the FA Women's Cup final at Wembley on May 14 when Chelsea take on Arsenal, before appearing at Stamford Bridge a day later in the final game of the Premier League season as the hosts take on champions Leicester City.

A statement from adidas said: "Showing the two facets of the club, the new kit presents the proud traditions of the club's heritage and on the other a determined mission to strive to be the best.

"With a focus on simple elegance and tradition, the new home shirt remains in a classic blue with white detailing; featuring a new side adidas three stripe execution and a classic v-neck collar with a fitted collar tape.

"The lead design feature takes its inspiration from the heart of the club crest with tonal lions adorning the sleeves and jersey front."
