Australian side Central Coast Mariners admit they are "at the mercy" of Manchester United over the future of Mike Phelan.
The 56-year-old was appointed as sporting director of the A-League side in July last year before joining then-caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at United as his assistant in December.
Solskjaer was confirmed as United's permanent manager in late March but the Mariners say they are waiting for clarification on Phelan's future.
"We are eager to have Mike continue on with the club but at the moment we are at the mercy of waiting to see what the future holds for Mike and United," a Central Coast Mariners spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News.
"We are still in constant dialogue with Mike, who has been fantastic, keeping us updated every step of the way.
"He's fond of the Mariners, we're fond of Mike, so hopefully he can continue his role with the academy."
Before Solskjaer's permanent appointment, Phelan said he would be keen to keep balancing his time between United and the Mariners if the Old Trafford hierarchy would let him.
United saw their top-four hopes come to an end last weekend following a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield.
