Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has surpassed all expectations, says Steve McClaren.

Steve McClaren believes Manchester United will have an "easy" managerial decision to make if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keeps on winning.

Having become Jose Mourinho's temporary successor in December, Solskjaer has overseen seven wins and a draw in the Premier League to lift a resurgent United to within two points of the top four.

United will appoint a new permanent manager in the summer and current QPR boss McClaren, who helped coach the Norwegian and his team-mates to a historic treble as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant in 1999, says Solskjaer has been "unbelievable" in the job so far.

"I think everyone was astonished at the appointment," McClaren told Sky Sports News. "(But) I know Ole well. He's a thinker and he's intelligent.

"He's a very good communicator with players. He's come into a situation where some people said he had nothing to lose - but he had everything to lose.

"No pressure? There's enormous pressure. It's one of the three biggest clubs in the world, so that's pressure in management. You put pressure on yourself because you want to do well, and I know Ole's ambitions.

"I think he's exceeded all expectations. They've played exciting, attacking, Manchester United old traditional football. And if it continues to work, I think Manchester United will have an easy decision to make at the end of the season.

"I've got to say he has tremendous staff around him; Mike Phelan must be a great help. The players have bought into it all very quickly and adapted to what they want and it's working.

"Ole proved in the Tottenham game last month what a good tactician he is and United will be a threat to all the top teams. And who knows - if you go on a run - anything can happen."

McClaren was attending a reception at the House of Commons to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the launch of the QPR Trust.

The club, who hosted the event on Monday, received accolades for their work in supporting their local community in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire of June 2017.

The tragedy, which happened just a mile from Loftus Road, claimed the lives of 72 people in one of the worst fires in London since World War II.

Rangers chairman Amit Bhatia said: "I stood up 10 years ago and said that a football club is much more than what happens on the pitch. It needs to be hugely important in its community.

"I didn't just come up with that. It came out of conversations with fans. We wanted to be important and the support we offered after Grenfell was a glaring example of that."

An FA Cup fourth-round replay win over Portsmouth at Loftus Road on Tuesday could see QPR reach the fifth round for the first time in 22 years.
