Ander Herrera will not face action from the FA after denying he deliberately spat on the Manchester City logo during Saturday's derby victory.
The Manchester United midfielder was seen spitting onto the ground outside the tunnel at half-time at the Etihad on Saturday, where a large City emblem is painted on the floor.
Sky sources say the Football Association will not be investigating the matter any further.
After United sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory, a club spokesperson told reporters: "Ander has seen the footage of the incident and is mortified at any suggestion that his actions were deliberate.
"It was entirely accidental and there was no intent whatsoever."
Herrera, started the match in midfield and played 89 minutes before being replaced by centre-back Victor Lindelof, said on Instagram: "I will always fight for my club's badge, but I always respect every other club crest too."
The Spain international set up Paul Pogba for the first of two fine goals for the France star, as United came from behind to stop City confirming their inevitable Premier League title.
Alongside a celebratory picture of himself, Herrera tweeted at full-time: "Never underestimate Manchester United."
Manchester United have also confirmed reports that a coin was thrown at manager Jose Mourinho but that the Portuguese does not wish to report in the incident.
A spokesperson told Sky Sports News: "There was a coin thrown and Jose Mourinho gave the coin to a nearby ball boy. No one was hurt so he doesn't want to make an issue out of it."
