Drinks breaks will be used in the UEFA Super Cup match between Manchester United and Real Madrid if there is no let up to the scorching weather in southern Europe.
Temperatures have rocketed recently thanks to a heatwave dubbed 'Lucifer' and Skopje, the capital of Macedonia where the match is taking place, has regularly experienced conditions above 40 degrees Celsius.
Manchester United have been training today at the National Arena Filip II in temperatures well above 30C and if there is a repeat for the match on Tuesday evening then cooling breaks will be implemented.
The match delegate will decide 90 minutes before kick-off whether to have drink breaks of three minutes, which will come approximately 30 minutes into each half.
As well as thermometer readings, the UEFA official will also take into account other factors such as the temperature dropping as the evening continues.
Even if cooling breaks are not used, UEFA say 20 kilos of crushed ice should be provided to both teams and shading arranged if the substitutes' benches are in direct sunshine.
