Jose Mourinho has confirmed Wayne Rooney is available for the EFL Cup final

Jose Mourinho has confirmed Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick will be available for Manchester United when they take on Southampton in the EFL Cup final on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Rooney, Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer, missed the midweek Europa League win over St Etienne but is fit for selection against Saints in the Wembley showpiece.

However, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has not recovered from a hamstring problem sustained in the 1-0 victory in France, while a late decision will be made over Phil Jones.

"He [Rooney] is fine, he's training with the team," said Mourinho during Friday's press conference.

"He was not selected for St Etienne because he was not ready to play, but he was ready to have one more important training session and no doubt, he is involved in the game."

Rooney, who scored the winner when Manchester United last won the League Cup in 2010, issued a statement on Thursday saying he would be staying at Old Trafford after being linked with a move to the Chinese Super League.

"He did it in exactly the right moment because I think this should be the last question about him until the end of the season," added Mourinho.
