Wayne Rooney has not travelled for Manchester United's Europa League tie at St Etienne, despite training on Tuesday morning, and remains a doubt for Sunday's EFL Cup final.
The England striker has not played for United since February 1 because of a small muscular injury and will not feature in Wednesday's fixture.
Mourinho said he did "not know" whether Rooney would be available to face Southampton on Sunday at Wembley, which is live on Sky Sports, when asked after the FA Cup win over Blackburn on Sunday.
And that remained his thought at a press conference before Wednesday's clash with the French side, after Rooney made a return to training earlier on Tuesday.
"I don't know - let's see," Mourinho said.
"Today was the first time Wayne trained and he did the basic things but when the session was high in intensity, he was not training."
Rooney trained as part of a group of 10 players which also included Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford at Carrington on Tuesday.
Goalkeeper David de Gea, who was rested for the Blackburn tie, was part of a second United training group but midfielder Ander Herrera did not train as he is suspended for the St-Etienne clash.
Defender Phil Jones, who has missed the last four games with a foot injury, was also absent, while Luke Shaw was not selected in the travelling party for the last-32 clash with St-Etienne, which United lead 3-0 after the first leg.
