Injured Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling trained alone again on Tuesday but it is all part of standard Manchester United procedure.

National newspaper reports claimed Shaw and Smalling could face similar fates to Bastian Schweinsteiger in being frozen out of the first team by Jose Mourinho after they pulled out of the weekend's win at Swansea.

Mourinho publicly questioned certain players' desire to play through pain following the 3-1 victory, and his apparent criticism of two popular players is understood not to have gone down well within the club.

But injured players are required to report for training even on scheduled days off and there is nothing untoward about Shaw and Smalling training alone at Carrington on Monday and Tuesday.

Shaw and Smalling conducted solo work as they continue their rehabilitation and, if passed fit, they will join the rest of the squad not featuring in international fixtures when they return on Wednesday.

Left-back Shaw, 21, returned in the summer from a horrific double leg break that kept him out for almost a year and England interim boss Gareth Southgate says he is still feeling issues with the limb.

As his side prepare to face Scotland on Friday, Southgate said: "After an injury as severe as that we have to handle that with care.

"There is a medical issue. If Shaw wasn't fit to play - and he was with us in September and was feeling problems with the leg back then - then there's clearly something."
