Jose Mourinho has already been busy in the transfer market but what else can we expect from Manchester United this summer?

The Red Devils have already brought in three major signings, but what are the remaining areas in need of strengthening?

We look at the situation with the help of manager quotes and expert pundit views.

Ins

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (PSG, free), Eric Bailly (Villarreal, £30m), Henrik Mkhitaryan (Borussia Dortmund, £26.3m)

What they need...

Mourinho has wasted no time in strengthening his squad, with former Borussia Dortmund playmaker Henrik Mkhitaryan joining Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly at Old Trafford last week. Those additions have addressed issues in attack and defence, but United still need a central midfielder.

It has been a problem position for United in recent years. Mourinho has already confirmed he has no plans to use Wayne Rooney there, while Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ander Herrera and Morgan Schneiderlin have struggled to hold down starting spots. The need for improvement is obvious, and there is likely to be more big spending to come.

Who are the targets?

Paul Pogba is the name on everyone's lips. Sky sources have confirmed that Manchester United are eager to bring him back to Old Trafford from Juventus, and the bidding is expected to start at £85m. United's hopes of signing the 23-year-old have been boosted after it emerged that Real Madrid have pulled out of the race for his signature.

Real Madrid's Toni Kroos could be an alternative if United can't complete a deal for Pogba, and they have also been linked with highly-rated West Ham youngster Reece Oxford.

What the manager has said

Mourinho outlined his transfer plans at his unveiling, saying he had a four-man shopping list and admitting there could be more comings and goings after that. "We made a nucleus of four positions as priority to give a certain balance to the squad," he said.

"From these targets we have three. Until we have the fourth we are working hard on that, with Mr Woodward and the owners. When we have them we will breathe, we will be stable, and the market will still be open."

Phil Thompson's view

"I think it's that spine that Jose Mourinho is looking to change. He's signed Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, so now the big one is in the middle and what Mourinho wants, Mourinho gets. £100m is obviously a lot for Paul Pogba but the prices are probably double what players are worth this summer due to the money coming into the Premier League.

"They need another centre-back as Phil Jones has had his problems and Daley Blind was only really cover, so it's just Chris Smalling who they can rely on. Juan Mata seems like he's going to be first out the door. It will be good to see Luke Shaw back because he was starting to look the real deal."
