Louis van Gaal received a mixed reception as he addressed the Old Trafford crowd

Louis van Gaal was booed by some fans as he thanked Manchester United supporters for their "unconditional" backing.

A topsy-turvy campaign ended with a 3-1 win at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday, with Wayne Rooney, Marcus Rashford and Ashley Young scoring before Chris Smalling turned a late Max Gradel effort into his own net.

That was too little, too late for many fans, with under-fire Van Gaal booed by portions of the crowd when addressing the fans after the game.

"I want to thank you for the unconditional support of you," he said. "Whenever we have played, however the things have gone on the field, you never let us down.

"Thank you for that and we want to bring the FA Cup home. You deserve it. Thank you."

Many applauded at the end of Van Gaal's address, but Bournemouth fans goaded him with chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning".

Louis van Gaal says Manchester United's 3-1 win against Bournemouth was a very good victory but admits he was irritated by conceding an own goal.

Fresh reports linking former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho to the Old Trafford job emerged before the match.

Van Gaal, whose side face Crystal Palace on Saturday in the FA Cup final, said: "Of course [I understand the boos], because I have also said that the expectation is very high, especially the fans.

"They are expecting a lot. But I think these expectations are much too high, and we are a team in transition, and that I have said when I started here.

"Maybe I have to bring over the message much clearer than I have done."
