Ander Herrera says Manchester United will fight until the end of the season for a place in the top four of the Premier League.
United have won four games in a row after completing their first back-to-back league wins since November with a 1-0 victory over Watford, following successes over Shrewsbury, FC Midtjylland and Arsenal.
A late free kick from Juan Mata was the difference between the two teams on Wednesday, and Herrera believes that being able to win without playing their best shows that the squad can return to the Champions League next season.
"We are showing passion that we want to fight until the end, and when we don't play good, we still have the belief that we can win," Herrera told the club's website.
"We were not so good with the ball in the beginning of the match and we gave them some chances, but if we want to fight for everything, including the race for the top four, then we need to win these kind of games."
After Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City all slipped up, the win at Old Trafford means United are now tied on points with fourth-placed City
Van Gaal's side are set to face West Brom in the league on Sunday, and will hope to maintain their momentum to break in to the top four.
"We know that a few weeks ago we weren't playing so well and losing matches we shouldn't have lost. We had two options: to either give up, or fight until the end," Herrera added.
"We want to be in the top four. This won't be easy... but we are Man United. If our opponents want to beat us they are going to have to fight."
Watford missed several chances at Old Trafford to leave empty-handed, but defender Sebastian Prodl was pleased with the performance.
"It is a nightmare result," Watford defender Prodl said. "We were the better team here for 80-90 minutes.
"You feel good when you are the dominating team against Manchester United. We lost to an amazing free-kick. We had chances to score five goals.
"Our performance was one of the best of the season. It is hard to say that because we lost the game, but if we carry on like this we will earn a lot of points between now and the end of the season."
