Michael Carrick admitted Manchester United were "nowhere near good enough" following Thursday night's shocking 2-1 defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League.
United have failed to win in their last three games and pressure is mounting on manager Louis Van Gaal amid reports linking Jose Mourinho with a move to Old Trafford.
Carrick, who was named as captain against the Danish champions, apologised to United fans, who have become impatient with Van Gaal - their frustration was evident with sustained chanting mocking their own team.
"I can't knock the supporters, they were incredible," said Carrick.
"They've been great throughout my time at the club, especially during the last couple of years when they haven't had much to shout about.
"They've stuck with us and traveled to support us so I can only apologise.
"Hopefully we can give them some reward for the unbelievable support they've shown both the players and the club."
United had 14 players out injured for the game, but Carrick did not use this as an excuse and believes they must improve in the return leg on February 25.
"You can talk about injuries but, irrespective of that, we can't make any excuses," said Carrick.
"To come here and lose is nowhere near good enough.
"The only positive is that we've got another chance at it (in the second leg), but it doesn't really change the fact that we were simply nowhere near good enough."
United are also struggling in the league and if they are to have a realistic chance of clinching a top four spot they will have to beat title favourites Arsenal who travel to Old Trafford on February 28, live on Sky Sports.
