The FA are waiting on Andre Marriner's referee report before deciding whether to refer an incident of Tottenham's Harry Kane clashing with Cesar Azpilicueta of Chelsea.
The two players were involved in an unsavoury incident as tempers flared in the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Kane was seen motioning his head in the direction of the Chelsea captain, as words were exchanged and the referee was forced to intervene.
The incident occurred after defender David Luiz took exception to Kane's heavy pressure to win back the ball, after Spurs had returned possession following Chelsea kicking into touch to allow Kieran Trippier to receive treatment.
Should Marriner's report return with no mention of the incident or with the admittance that he did not have a clear view of the coming together, the FA can appoint a panel of three former referees to observe video footage.
In such circumstance, a unanimous decision would be required in order for the FA to then proceed and charge the player, with all three in agreement.
Spurs' next three Premier League fixtures, which could be impacted by any potential ban, include the north London derby at home to Arsenal before trips to Southampton and Liverpool.
