David Moyes says two "poor" mistakes helped Manchester United to a 3-1 win over his Sunderland side.
Sunderland were in the game at 1-0 down with nine minutes remaining at Old Trafford before Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the hosts' lead, after Paul Pogba had initially robbed Didier Ndong in midfield.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a third with a stunning finish, despite being offside, and the former United manager complained that some mistakes cannot be coached out of players.
Asked if the scoreline was fair, Moyes told Sky Sports: "No I don't think it is, but ultimately we gave away two horrendous goals, the second and third, albeit the third was offside.
"We were always hanging in there at 1-0, we knew that was going to be the case, but I can't fault the players for their effort, what they were trying to do, but the quality, difference in quality between the two teams, is the big thing.
"We knew we had those couple of half chances, but the way they're playing at the moment I thought we did a good job on them.
"The mistakes were poor mistakes, poor passes, simple, it's very difficult to teach or coach them any different, if you can't do that, you're in trouble.
"But I've got to say the players didn't deserve to lose the way they did, and we did OK in some patches of the game."
Sunderland are now 18th, a point off safety, and face Burnley at Turf Moor in a vital clash on New Year's Eve.
"All the games for us are big games now," Moyes added. "There are some that probably have more significance than others and Burnley is one of them."
The Scot was returning to Old Trafford for the first time since his ill-fated short spell at United in 2013/14, but said the reception he received was positive.
Moyes said: "With football supporters you never know, but it was good today, everybody at Manchester United was very good. I had a good time in my time here."
