Premier League clubs are jetting across the world on pre-season tours - but Tottenham are racking up most air miles this summer.

Last-season's third-place side, whose players clocked more minutes at Euro 2016 than those from any other Premier League club, will travel 21,178 miles before returning for the start of the new 2016/17 campaign.

We take a closer look at their plans - as well as the packed schedules for the likes of champions Leicester and Antonio Conte's Chelsea - and see if it could impact their performance this season.

Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino's side are one of six Premier League teams competing in the International Champions Cup - a series of mini-tournaments across the globe - but while rivals will play some fixtures in London and Glasgow, Spurs face a gruelling 22-hour flight to Melbourne and back. They will take on Juventus and Atletico Madrid there before returning to London via Oslo for a final pre-season test against Inter Milan.

Pochettino's players have already had a busy summer. A recent survey by the Press Association found Spurs stars collectively played 3,544 minutes at Euro 2016 - over 900 more than the second most-involved Premier League side, their north London rivals Arsenal.

But not every manager is a fan of taking a global trip to gear themselves up for the new season, with Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce sticking closer to home as the Black Cats look to avoid another relegation battle.

"Going around the continent and around the world, America, places like that - it isn't right for any team to be doing when you are building up to a massive game in the Premier League again," Allardyce said.

Does pre-season distance matter?

Looking at the stats for Leicester City, some may say yes. The Premier League champions didn't venture abroad for their 2015 pre-season travels, their furthest trip being to Rotherham - 66.4 miles up the M1 - and the remainder coming in the Midlands.

They began the season with 12 points from six games, and we all know where they went on to finish, ahead of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham who all travelled long distances in their pre-season preparations.

2015 pre-season

Club Distance travelled in miles Standing after six games Final league position
Spurs 32,259 (21, 594 without 'post-season friendlies') 9 points in 9th 3rd
Liverpool 21,743 8 points in 13th 8th
Man City 21,116 15 points in 1st 4th
Arsenal 13,520 10 points in 5th 2nd
Everton 13,520 9 points in 6th 11th
Stoke 13,520 3 points in 18th 9th
Man Utd 10,963 13 points in 2nd 5th
Chelsea 10,064 7 points in 15th 10th
Leicester 245 12 points in 4th 1st

Some who went globetrotting did begin well - City were first after six games and Manchester United second - but both sides did tail off as the season went on, eventually finishing in fourth and fifth place respectively.

Arsenal, Everton and Stoke travelled the same approximate distance of 13,520 miles. The Gunners and Everton were fifth and sixth respectively after six games while Stoke were in 18th. The Potters and Toffees eventually finished just four points apart, while Arsene Wenger's men surged into a second-place finish.

However, the likes of Stoke, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham all began their 2015/16 season slowly after venturing far and wide in pre-season, with only Spurs finishing in the top four - although they did travel the furthest of all the Premier League clubs.
