Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry picked their team of the season so far on Monday Night Football, as the Premier League moves towards the halfway stage.

The Sky Sports pundits agreed on seven players who warranted a place in the XI, but couldn't decide on the final four positions.

Up for grabs were goalkeeper, the final centre-back and central midfield positions, plus one attacking midfield role.

Carragher preferred Manchester United stopper David de Gea to Henry’s selection – Stoke's Jack Butland – while the former Liverpool defender picked another United player in Chris Smalling over Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny.

There were also differing opinions in midfield with Carragher picking Everton's Ross Barkley and Henry selecting Arsenal star Santi Cazorla.

The former Gunner also sided with another Arsenal star in Alexis Sanchez but he was up against West Ham forward Dimitri Payet for the final attacking midfield role.

However, it was left down to the public, who voted on Twitter, to decide on who should complete the Monday Night Football team of the season so far, and here's who they voted for...

GOALKEEPER - Jack Butland (60 per cent)

HENRY SAYS: "He's gone seven games without conceding and he's made some massive saves in some of the games. I'm also giving him a tiny bit more credit because he plays for Stoke City and at times he will be more exposed. He hasn't conceded a lot of goals and he's been doing brilliantly since the start of the season."

CARRAGHER'S PICK: David de Gea (40 per cent)

CENTRE-BACK - Chris Smalling (54 per cent)

CARRAGHER SAYS: "I'll go back to what I said about Smalling a couple of years ago where he never kicked on, but now he's become a man. He's become a leader for Manchester United and I think this season the improvement he's made to where he's come now, I think he's been the best centre-back in the Premier League. A lot of United's defensive record comes from him."

HENRY'S PICK: Laurent Koscielny (46 per cent)

CENTRE-MIDFIELD - Ross Barkley (63 per cent)

CARRAGHER SAYS: "The reason I've gone for Barkley is because of the stats! He's got six goals and six assists so far this season. The other player we picked was N'Golo Kante so he's going to do the running and put in the challenges so I wanted someone who is going forward, getting goals and getting assists. The problem I had was that there weren't too many midfield players standing out for me. I was looking at Dele Alli but a lot of the time he's played in the No 10 position. But the reason I went for Barkley is because of the massive improvement he's made."

HENRY'S PICK - Santi Cazorla (37 per cent)

ATTACKING MIDFIELD - Alexis Sanchez (62 per cent)

HENRY SAYS: "I went for Sanchez because of the impact he has on the team, not only creating and scoring goals, but what he does on the field in terms of his work rate. I debated going with Payet but I had to go with the work rate Sanchez brings to the team."

CARRAGHER'S PICK - Dimitri Payet (38 per cent)

MNF TEAM OF THE SEASON SO FAR: Jack Butland, Hector Bellerin, Toby Alderweireld, Chris Smalling, Nacho Monreal, N'Golo Kante, Ross Barkley, Riyad Mahrez, Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez, Jamie Vardy.
