Essential Stats: Top Liverpool v Manchester City stats

Liverpool host Manchester City live on Sky Sports Premier League this Sunday

Man City

From Liverpool's winning run, to Manchester City's wretched record at Anfield, we pick five essential stats ahead of their blockbuster clash this weekend.

The last Premier League meeting between these sides produced a thrilling 4-3 win for Liverpool at Anfield back in January.

Since then, Jurgen Klopp's side have also beaten City twice in the Champions League quarter-finals to make it three successive wins.

In each of those games, City had more attempts, more possession and more touches in the opposition box. But, crucially, they failed to convert their chances and Liverpool took full advantage.

City's poor record at Anfield is not just confined to the Pep Guardiola era, as successive Manchester City managers have struggled to find the winning formula on Merseyside.

It's now been over 15 years since City last beat Liverpool at Anfield, a run that has seen them lose 12 of their last 17 visits in all competitions.

They have also failed to score in seven of these games, but perhaps, more worryingly for City fans, they have never kept a clean sheet in any of their 21 Premier League visits to Liverpool.

Guardiola will be hoping for a change in fortunes for City on Sunday, but he'll be up against a manager who knows how to beat him better than anyone else.

Klopp has beaten Guardiola more times than any other manager, with the German winning eight of their 14 managerial meetings.

Since taking over at Liverpool, Klopp has won three of his five games against Guardiola - but only one of those wins has been in the Premier League.

Also, Guardiola has won just one of the last seven meetings since 2015 - his only success coming in City's 5-0 Premier League win at the Etihad in September 2017.

Another blow for City is the revelation that Sergio Aguero has been playing through the pain barrier in recent weeks due to a foot injury.

City's record goalscorer has bagged over 200 goals for the club - but, remarkably, not one of them has been at Anfield.

Aguero's poor record at Anfield extends to his time at Atletico Madrid. He has yet to score, or be on the winning side, in nine career appearances in front of The Kop.

However, the Argentine has scored 35 Premier League goals against 'big six' sides since joining City in 2011 - scoring 15 goals more than any other player.

So, if fit, Aguero would give City a massive boost, as both he and his side look to bring an end to their poor records at Anfield.

But it's not all doom and gloom for City, though. They have won nine of their 11 Premier League games against fellow top-six sides since the start of last season.

They have also won more points and scored more goals in these games than any other side. However one of their two defeats was against Liverpool at Anfield in January.

In contrast, Liverpool have won only 14 points from 12 games against top-six sides, drawing five and winning only three.
