10 Premier League players who have struggled for playing time this season

Cesc Fabregas, Alberto Moreno and Memphis Depay

With the January window open, we take a look at 10 players who have struggled for playing time in the league this season...

Whatever the reason - form, fitness or competition for places - plenty of big names have found themselves on the bench so far.

By looking at players who made a minimum of 10 Premier League appearances last term, we've primarily focused on those who have seen their playing time reduced.

While a January move may not necessarily be on the cards, many of the names below have been linked with transfers. Could a switch be the career boost they need?

For reference, a player who has not missed a minute so far this season has played 1,800 minutes

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea) - 8 minutes played

The highly-rated youngster looked set for a breakthrough campaign after making 13 top-flight appearances last season and it initially looked promising when Antonio Conte took charge in the summer.

Loftus-Cheek made two EFL Cup starts and won praise from the Italian, who hailed his "great potential" in August.

But he's made a single league appearance since and his transition into a more attacking role has failed to pay dividends, with Nathaniel Chalobah often now preferred in Chelsea's matchday squad.

Morgan Schneiderlin (Man Utd) - 11 minutes played

Sky sources understand West Brom are keen on the out-of-favour Frenchman but are yet to make a second bid after their opening £18m offer was rejected by Man Utd.

Having made 29 appearances under Louis van Gaal last season, Schneiderlin has been restricted to just 11 minutes of Premier League football.

His new boss Jose Mourinho has said he won't stand in his way should the right offer come in, with Everton - now managed by Schneiderlin's former Southampton manager Ronald Koeman - also in talks.

Kenedy (Chelsea, on loan at Watford) - 16 minutes played

Former interim Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink was a fan but Kenedy faces a battle to prove his worth to Conte, who allowed him to join Watford on a season-long loan in August.

Injury disrupted his time at Vicarage Road and he returned to Chelsea having played just 16 minutes of top-flight football, a surprising outcome considering his emergence on the left flank was one of the few bright spots for the Blues last season.

The signing of Marcos Alonso further harms his prospects at Stamford Bridge, with Conte recently hinting "a new solution" may be required for the Brazilian.

Memphis Depay (Man Utd) - 20 minutes played

Koeman has already confirmed his interest in Depay, who has been marginalised under Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The Dutch winger has fallen behind Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Mourinho admitted last month Depay is no longer part of his plans.

He scored five goals in all competitions in his debut season in English football, but is yet to start a match this term.

Jordon Mutch (Crystal Palace) - 50 minutes played

The 25-year-old has made just four substitute appearances in the league for Palace - three of them coming since Sam Allardyce replaced Alan Pardew prior to Christmas.

It suggests the new manager could have a role for Mutch, who has reportedly attracted interest from a number of Championship clubs, including Reading.

He featured 20 times in the Premier League last season.

Carl Jenkinson (Arsenal) - 83 minutes played

Jenkinson's single league appearance so far came in the draw with Man Utd back in November, and Arsenal are seemingly prepared to let him leave this January.

Former Hull City boss Mike Phelan was interested before his departure, while a return to West Ham, where Jenkinson made 20 Premier League appearances last season, could be a possibility too.

Jordan Rhodes (Middlesbrough) - 208 minutes played

Signed by Boro to help them over the line in the Sky Bet Championship last January, Rhodes chipped in with a handy six goals in 13 starts.

But he's played second fiddle to summer signing Alvaro Negredo since stepping up to the Premier League and the arrival of Rudy Gestede should push him further down the pecking order.

The Scotland international is yet to score in the league this campaign and has completed a full 90 minutes just once - against Southampton in early December.

Ashley Young (Man Utd) - 234 minutes played

Young played 18 times in the Premier League last season but, like Depay, he's seen his role reduced significantly under Mourinho.

The former England international has completed 90 minutes twice - against Liverpool and Swansea - but the most recent of the two was all the way back in early November.

He has featured just once for the club since then, starting United's 2-0 win over Zorya in the Europa League in December.

Alberto Moreno (Liverpool) - 254 minutes played

Moreno has played just one full league game since he was heavily criticised for his performance in the season-opening victory at Arsenal.

Jurgen Klopp has preferred James Milner in Moreno's favoured left-back position, restricting the Spaniard to a handful of substitute appearances.

It caps a swift fall from grace for Moreno, who was first choice last season, featuring in 32 of Liverpool's 38 Premier League games.

Cesc Fabregas (Chelsea) - 472 minutes played

Fabregas, who only missed one league match last term, has gone from ever present to first replacement at Chelsea.

He's started just five of 19 top-flight games this season, although a fine run of form in December, coupled with the departure of Oscar to China, suggests Conte may be warming to the former Barcelona man.

The same can't be said of another Chelsea team-mate, Michy Batshuayi.

The £33m summer signing had a key role in 26 goals from 32 starts for Marseille last season but still has not started a league fixture for the Blues.
