Guus Hiddink v Louis van Gaal: Chelsea boss has winning record over Manchester United manager

Van Gaal Hiddink

Under pressure Louis van Gaal won't relish the prospect of coming up against compatriot Guus Hiddink at Chelsea on Super Sunday - the Manchester United boss has managed just one win over his fellow Dutchman in eight attempts.

The pair's rivalry spans three countries and 18 years but Chelsea's interim boss has dominated their recent meetings, winning four of their past five encounters. The only exception was this season's 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in December.

You have to rewind to February 1999 for Van Gaal's solitary win over a Hiddink-managed side. That came at the Nou Camp, where his Barcelona team - featuring Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique and Rivaldo - defeated Real Madrid 3-0.

Unfriendly rivalry?

Reports suggest Hiddink and Van Gaal are not friends. The pair refused to shake hands or acknowledge each other before their first meeting in September 1998, when Real Madrid hosted Barcelona.

The pair are also known to have a very different approach to management. Wesley Sneijder, who has played under both, has described Hiddink as "the friendly uncle" and Van Gaal as the "tough school teacher".

However, both have enjoyed significant success as club managers.
