Sky Sports takes a look at how the Papa Johns Trophy panned out in 2022/23.
Rotherham won the 2021/22 edition in April, defeating Sutton 4-2 after extra-time, but their promotion back to the Sky Bet Championship means they were unable to defend their title.
Meanwhile, five Premier League U21 teams reached the first knockout stage, including Chelsea and Arsenal - the latter of whom reached the quarter-finals last season.
None of those five took part in the quarter-finals, however, with the Gunners and Wolves losing out to Stevenage and Manchester United U21 in the first knockout round and United, Everton, and Chelsea falling to Bolton, Lincoln and Cheltenham respectively in the last 16.
Bolton lifted the trophy for the first time since the 1988/89 season when they beat Plymouth 4-0 at Wembley on Sunday April 2 2023.
